It appears Manchester City has won their case and will play Champions League next year. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) have released their decision today. They find that Manchester City FC did not disguise equity funding as sponsorship contributions as had been alleged, but that they did fail to cooperate with the UEFA authorities in their investigations.

The CAS decision specifically states that the exclusion from participation in UEFA club competitions is lifted, and the fine will be reduced from EUR 30 million to EUR 10 million.

The CAS did not feel that obstruction of the investigation warranted either penalty as initially imposed by UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) back in February.

Still a hefty fine, but in this age of extraordinary transfer fee’s and salaries, it seems a small price to pay.

More details are expected to be released in the next few days.

After this weekend’s matches which saw Chelsea and Leicester City loose, and Manchester United draw, this decision makes the final qualifying spot that much more interesting with three matches remaining.
