Manchester United Owner Malcolm Glazer Dies at 85

Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner and president Malcolm Glazer died Wednesday morning at the age of 85. The Glazer family bought the Bucs in 1995. The team won its first and only championship after the 2002 season. Malcolm Glazer also bought Manchester United in 2005, in a controversial takeover that was heavily criticized by a large section of their fans for loading debt onto the club. United are one of the world’s richest clubs behind  Real Madrid and Barcelona valued at $2.81 billion by Forbes. Glazer had borrowed money to complete his takeover of Manchester United, plunging the club into over $1 billion worth of debt overnight, and installed his sons Bryan, Joel and Avram to the board. Protests were widespread among fans in England but despite this animosity United’s succeeded  on the pitch.

The English Premier League club won five EPL championships and a Champions League title after he bought the team. Malcolm Glazer never really had any hand in Manchester as he had suffered a stroke in 2006 that impaired his speech and his mobility in his right arm. Manchester United reached the Champions League final in 2009 and 2011 and won English League Cups in 2006, 2009 and 2010.
