Manchester United Club History
This is meant to be a summary of the club history
Founding Background
Manchester United was originally founded and registered as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878 and did not change it’s name until 1902. Eight years later in 1910, Manchester United moved into what we now call The Theatre of Dreams, Old Trafford.
Significant Historical Events
On February 6th, 1958 the club suffered a tragic loss in what is known as the Munich Air Disaster claiming the lives of eight of it’s players. The club was on the way home from a European Cup match and had stopped in Munich to refuel. After two failed attempts at take-off in poor weather the pilots attempted a third which ultimately failed as well ending in a crash. This tragic event claimed the lives of:
- Geoff Bent
- Roger Byrne
- Eddie Colman
- Duncan Edwards (survived the crash, but died in hospital 15 days later)
- Mark Jones
- David Pegg
- Tommy Taylor
- Liam “Billy” Whelan
