Rooney, Kagawa and Mata worked well in victory over Aston Villa

David Moyes sent out yet another different lineup in today’s home game against Aston Villa.  Villa caused some consternation by scoring first in the early going, but United rallied and ended up as victors, with a final score of 4-1.

Kagawa and Mata worked well together providing good movement and service to Wayne Rooney.  Kagawa’s pinpoint assist to Rooney’s header leveled the score. Kagawa later provided a beautiful ball toward Mata, which split the center backs. Mata was taken down in the box for a penalty which Rooney put away for his second goal of the match. The advantage gave the United players a lift going into half time.

Mata scores

Mata happy with first ManU goal

In the second half Mata finished a ball that was pinging around in Villa’s box for his first United goal.  I didn’t understand Moyes’ substitution of Januzaj for Kagawa, but Januzaj provided service to Chicharito who scored the fourth and final goal of the game.  Fellaini  has  looked a bit more settled in the last few games, and has played better in more of a holding center mid.  He worked hard today both in offense and defense.

For me, it was the dynamic created by Kagawa, Mata and Rooney in  the attack. Kagawa and Mata have great control and movement, although as the game announcer said, Kagawa is best when he’s an attacking center mid behind the forwards.  Nevertheless,  some interesting possibilities could come from having both Kagawa and Mata on the pitch at the same time.  I won’t hold my breath however. I was amazed today when Kagawa actually got the start, nevermind, actually getting to play!

Today was a much needed salve for the horrible loss against City earlier this week.  The next BIG test will  be the first leg in the next Champions League round against Bayern on April 1st. Let’s hope the team comes out ready to play, and well prepared, so they’re not the fools of the day!
