Manchester United vs. Everton Breakdown

It was quite a disappointing defeat United suffered at home yesterday against Everton. Bryan Oviedo ended the clubs 21 year wait to beat the Red Devils at the Theatre of Dreams with an 86th minute goal that would ultimately be the deciding factor in a 1-0 win. I was unable to watch the game live yesterday but watched a recording of the game this morning. Here were my quick thoughts throughout the game.

United Post Game thoughts

We had a lot of possession in the attacking half of the field but didn’t look too threatening until Giggs made an attempt on goal from a great cross in by Rafael.

Have to give credit to Tim Howard for making some early saves to keep the score level. Including a great toe save to push the deflected shot from Wayne Rooney that was headed towards Kagawa.

Lukaku showed great strength up top for Everton. I loved his eagerness to win the ball and hold off defenders.

We just didn’t look like we had enough players forward from the 30th minute because Everton held their defensive shape very well.

To his credit Felaini had a good first half stopping the Everton counter attack with some good tackles.

The second half was much more balanced in attacking. I did wish Shinji was involved with more of the play and combining with Rooney.

I felt as if Welbeck should have been able to put the 72nd minute header in after Howard blocked Evra’s first attempt. It didn’t look like Welbeck jumped as high as I know he can, and therefore was slightly under the ball when he headed it deflecting off of the cross bar.

Valencia just fell asleep at the back post in the 68th minute because we were unable to clear our lines.

After this game I can’t see any reason Baines would want to leave Everton for United. I think Moyes will need to make some very big moves in the January transfer window that will show some direction he’s taking with the team.

I have always felt the move with Felaini was always an overpaid contract but I was open to the role he was to fill, but have just been disappointed with that performance in overall. I felt he had given up at the end of the game a little bit after the 85th minute goal.

The Big Question: Are We Suffering In The Attack Because Robin Van Persie Is Out?

What do you guys think?
