Germany wins the 2014 World Cup

Goetze scores winner

Goal Celebration!

Germany are Champions of the 2014 World Cup. As a fan of Germany…I am so happy about that!  I think most fans would agree this was an unbelievably entertaining World Cup. Some of the last minute drama, finishes, saves, were what you would hope for and expect from the best of the best in their sport. The Final was a tense, tightly played game by Germany and Argentina, which is what you want by the two final teams. The play was clean for the most part and very little controversy. Argentina played a really good game and actually looked more dangerous on counter attacks, had a goal called back for offside, and a couple one-on-ones with the goalkeeper. However, when it counted, they couldn’t provide the knock out goal. When Germany finally got a chance to bring the ball down the side near the end of extra time, the service into the box was perfect, as was the finish by Mario Goetze, 1-0 for Germany.

Manuel Neuer saves

Neuer save!

Manuel Neuer won the Golden Glove as best goalkeeper of the tournament. Hands down, no pun intended, he was the best. More games played, some spectacular smart saves and great leadership from the back.

Messi

Messi

Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball award, but I think that was a consolation and not necessarily the right choice. Messi is constantly compared to Diego Maradona.  My opinion is Messi’s better. He works incredibly hard, is humble, and ‘cheating’ isn’t tops in his skill set. I hope people will see he is a player of incredible talent and should be able to stand on the results of his own merit.

Germany won and no wonder. In the entire month long tournament they had:

  • Most goals scored by a team: 18
  • Best goal difference: +14
  • Most goals scored in a match by one team: 7 Germany against Brazil
  • Biggest margin of victory: 6 goals Brazil 1 – 7 Germany
  • Most clean sheets achieved by a team: 4 Germany (Manuel Neuer), Argentina and Netherlands
  • Fewest clean sheets given by an opposing team: 0 Germany, Algeria, Colombia, Croatia, Ghana, Ivory Coast
  • Thomas Mueller: 5 goals, 2nd in the tournament
  • Toni Kroos 4 assists (tied with Juan Cuadrado for the most); Thomas Mueller 3 assists
  • Thomas Mueller: one of two players to score a hat trick
  • Miroslav Klose: made history scoring a total of 16 goals in all World Cup play

The best and most complete team won the World Cup. Congratulations to Germany.
