Manchester United Shreds LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl

Manchester United traveled to the Rose Bowl to play the LA Galaxy of the MLS on Wednesday, July 23rd. It was so exciting to have the chance to see so many ManU stars. LA Galaxy’s stars included Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan. As U.S. fans remember, Donovan was passed over for the World Cup by Jurgen Klinsmann. But for ManUnited fans who were out en masse, it was about seeing their stars and new manager Louis van Gaal….oh! and new Assistant Coach, Ryan Giggs in his official role as van Gaal’s second. Prior to the game Giggs helped run a couple new players and Chicharito for some training. This allowed fans, many who know Chicharito from the Mexican National Team, a glimpse of him since he was not slated to play in the game. It was an exciting and fun match for the over 86,000 fans, most sporting Red Devil shirts.

Despite Robin van Persie not traveling with the team, there were plenty of others to ogle over including: Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Juan Mata, David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Nani, Shinji Kagawa, and Rafael. Also traveling are new additions to the squad: Luke Shaw, Reece James and Ander Herrera who made good showings during the evening.James scores in LA Galaxy demolition

Red’s fans were in a celebratory mood all through the game as ManUnited won with a 7-0 victory over the Galaxy and were treated to the Glory, Glory ManUnited song, and new kit sponsor ad, numerous times. Four United players scored: Welbeck 13, Rooney 42 (pen), 45, James 62, 84, Young 88, 90; James and Young having come in as second half substitutes. Galaxy big names, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan (second half sub) were non factors, although to be fair, Keane looked his usual feisty self and was the more active of the two. I think Galaxy’s Man-of-the-Match was their goal keeper, Jaime Penedo who made several key stops.

Today the squad open play in the International Champions Cup (ICC) against AS Roma in Denver. They continue to train, but have also been enjoying sites and fans around Denver. This game is expected to be a bigger test than the one against the LA Galaxy. Anticipation for the new season is building. Go Reds!
