The Trophy Moves Across Town in Manchester
- Updated: May 12, 2014
Congratulations to Manchester City for keeping the pressure on the top of the table, winning when they had to in the stretch and taking the league title yesterday. While of course I’m not a big fan of Manchester City, I wanted them to get the title over Liverpool. Liverpool pulled out a win of their own in their last game of the season, but it was too late. When it counted the most, they dropped points in the prior two games; the most unbelievable in the Crystal Palace game. After having led 3-0, Crystal Palace came back in the last 15 minutes of the game to tie it. Unbelievable, and not the stuff of champions. When all is said and done….Manchester City are deservedly league champions this season.
It was an exciting finish to the season at the top and bottom of the table. Norwich, Fulham and Cardiff City are relegated to Championship football next season while Leicester City, Burnley plus the winner of the play off will move up. QPR and Wigan are playing off so one of them will not have the chance to return to the top. They drew 0-0 in the first leg at Wigan and will play the second at QPR. Derby County is leading 1-0 going into the second leg of their playoff against Brighton & Hove Albion. Brighton had a dramatic late winner the last game of the season to pull ahead of Reading and into the playoffs. The second leg games are being played today, so we’ll see who gets to the final playoff game.
So the trophy crosses town from Old Trafford to the Etihad in Manchester. United fans will be hoping that whoever is named manager will be able to reignite the old spark and bring the winning ways back to Old Trafford. Lastly, I hope if the manager is not Ryan Giggs, which it probably won’t be, then that his value, contribution and loyalty to the team will be repaid with an assistant position at the very least!
