World Cup rosters are set – Friendlies being played

World Cup Day 3 Groups C & D

Anticipation is building as the days count down to the start of the World Cup.  During this time we have seen all of the participating countries name their 23 man rosters. We’re also being treated to many International Friendlies as the coaching staffs try to work out tactics and player partnerships. These are also games where the teams heading down to Brazil can tune-up and try to firm up their starting 11.  Unfortunately for a few players, the ‘friendlies’ turned out to be anything but!

Luis Montes of Mexico, Ecuadorian mid-fielder Segundo Castillo, Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart,  Alvaro Saborio of Costa Rica, Riccardo Montolivo of Italy and Croatian Nico Kranjcar have all been injured.  Heartbreaking for the players who won’t be able to go to the World Cup after just celebrating their inclusion on their squads. Players don’t hold back as they work to gain a position on the starting 11; it’s doubtful it even enters their minds when they step on the pitch to play.

It’s good to see the U.S. players are focusing on their jobs and working hard to make a good showing in Brazil. They’ve moved forward after the roster announcement, and hopefully the media pundits will do the same.  It’s like they want us to fail so they can point at Klinsmann and say it’s all because he didn’t take Donovan. Seriously? Reminder… we’re playing Ghana, Portugal and Germany.

Good Luck to our Men’s National Soccer Team! May they have a good showing, and if the soccer stars are in alignment…May they get out of the group!
