Juan Mata Leads United to 4-0 Away Victory over Newcastle

Moyes’ preparation for the upcoming champions league game showed again with yet another mix of players in todays line up.

Moyes featured:

  1. Lindegaard
  2. Evra
  3. Jones
  4. Smalling
  5. Valencia
  6. Kagawa
  7. Fletcher
  8. Mata
  9. Fellaini
  10. Young – subbed out for Januzaj 16′
  11. Chicharito

The beginning of the game featured a strong United attack down the right hand side with Young, Mata, and Kagawa combining to cause trouble with the Newcastle back line. It was apparent in today’s match the lack of height in the attacking third of the field, so many dangerous crosses did not find any targets. In the defensive half of the field, United was able to keep shape and defend well, with only Demba Cisse providing Newcastle with a chance off of his head that Lindegaard  had to push over the bar. Manchester United held clear possession and didn’t quite crack the Newcastle defense until the 38th minute when Juan Mata put a beautiful free kick over the wall from 20 yards out.

In the 49th Minute Kagawa took advantage of a miscue by Coloccini and released Javier Hernandez down the line. Hernandez put the ball back across the 18 and found Mata, who calmly collected the ball 5 yards out and scored. It was a boost of confidence for the team and in the 65th minute Chicharito added himself to the score board with a cut-back pass from Kagawa. Chicharito’s constant movement has given many defenders trouble. Cisse forced two excellent late saves from Lindegaard but Januzaj added a fourth for United after an excellent one-two with Mata, handing United a dominant victory at St. James’ Park.
