Smalling Sees RED in Manchester Derby
- Updated: November 2, 2014
Started with a bang, both squads working hard; action box to box.
Referee Michael Oliver decided not to show yellow cards for two pull downs by Manchester City players.
Yellow card on Fellani and Smalling.
Second yellow to red for bad challenge against Milner by Smalling. United down to 10 men under 40 minutes into game. Both of Smalling’s yellows were ridiculous fouls, and so put his team in dire straights.
Januzaj pulled and Michael Carrick put in. Carrick has just returned from a long injury spell.
At the Half; nil nil.
It’s unfortunate that Smalling was sent off because the game was really starting to shape up, although City had the better chances. I didn’t think Januzaj made good decisions when he found himself with the ball wide. Instead he kept trying to hold and bring it in; was stripped of the ball several times. He should have crossed the ball into the box.
City scores early in the second half when Sergio Arguero was left alone and Clichy fed him the ball. He couldn’t miss inside the 6 yard box. The case, again, of a Manchester United player switching off and not marking their man.
Manchester United had their opportunities and couldn’t convert. Although I wonder why Rooney didn’t even take a shot when he had a one-on-one with Joe Hart. Fellaini missed two header opportunities.
Di Maria’s corners have been poor for several weeks now. Time to have RVP, Rooney or someone else take them.
Luke Shaw is beginning to show me why he was a much touted pick up. He had a stellar game.
Rojo was stretchered off the pitch after suffering a bad shoulder injury; possibly dislocated.
Game over. City won the Derby … again. United have their worst start in 24 years. Even worse than under Moyes’ last season. However, there are signs that the team’s spirit is better as well as their will to work. Hopefully we can get Falcao back on the pitch as well as sort out our defending woes.
